Keynote Speech

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Deike was born in Berlin 1959 and studied from 1979 to 1985 Foundry Science at the TU Clausthal. He worked at the Institute of General Metallurgy from 1985 to 1991. He received his doctorate on reactions between liquid silicon and graphite concerning alternative processes for producing silicon for solar cells. In 1991, he started working for DK Recycling and Roheisen GmbH in Duisburg, a medium-sized company that recycles filter dust (about 450.000 t/a) from the steel industry, from which pig iron is produced again with a blast furnace.  He became deputy CEO in 1999, with full responsibility for the whole technique. He left DK in 2003 and founded DEIKE Iron Metals Services GmbH. In 2007, he was appointed professor for iron and steel technology at the University of Duisburg Essen. Since then he has worked on sustainability issues, in particular recovery of metals from dissipative distributions in industrial waste (filter dust, slag, bottom ash, etc.), and the processing of mineral fractions into secondary building materials. He has also been involved with developments in the raw materials markets for 20 years. His most essential publications can be found here.
