CEWEP Residues Conference ‘Ash to Resource’ 2024 in Mechelen

CEWEP’s international Conference focused solely on residues from Waste-to-Energy titled “Ash to Resource”, took place on 25th September 2024 at the LAMOT Congress Center in Mechelen, Belgium. The event gathered more than 120 experts from the WtE sector, residues treatment sector, technology providers and academia to discuss trends and innovations in the treatment and utilization of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) residues.

The conference was moderated by our very own Working Group Residues Chair Anne Kulmala from Fortum, Finland. The introductory session highlighted key historical and future developments in residue management and material recovery. Notable speakers included Claudia Mensi (A2A Ambiente), professor Rüdiger Deike and Dr. Wolfgang Trunk (European Commission).

Other topics discussed:

• Highlighting the varied European landscape of residues treatment, recovery and utilisation
• Exploring innovative treatment technologies for fly ashes
• Showcasing the environmental benefits of residues utilisation

The conference day was concluded with a networking dinner, during which the winners of the Carsten Spohn Award were announced. On 26th September, participants were welcomed at the Indaver Doel site for a technical visit to the on-site residues treatment.
