Vilniaus kogeneracinė jėgainė and Kauno kogeneracinė jėgainė have become the newest members of the European Waste-to-Energy operators‘ community. Both plants are currently under construction and should start operation in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
Vilniaus kogeneracinė jėgainė with a waste treatment capacity of 160,000 tonnes per year will be treating residual waste coming from Vilnius and Utena regions and will have a 19 MW electricity generation and 60 MW heat production capacity. With its two additional biofuel boilers, it is planned that the plant will cover almost half of the heating demand of Vilnius, the capital and the largest city of Lithuania.
Kauno kogeneracinė jėgainė will have the waste treatment capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year and will operate in Kaunas, the second largest city of Lithuania. It will supply around 40% of the city‘s heat demand and it is plannned that the electicity generation capacity of the plant will be 24 MW and heat production capacity will be 70 MW.
“We are very happy to welcome the new members from Lithuania. The two new Waste-to-Energy plants will help Lithuania to phase out its landfilling of residual waste that cannot be recycled and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels. It is an example of a real win-win situation that can be achieved in this region of Europe that already has the district heating infrastructure in place”, says Mr Paul De Bruycker, the President of CEWEP.
